Re the wording on the personal notes. It's definitely the Smythe Channel. Regarding the ship with the corrugated bottom. In the Dixon book "The enemy fought splendidly" on Thursday 4th February 1915, Dixon records the Kent picking up a new collier the Braunton. Could this be the mystery ship?
